3D Printer Design & Builds
Designing and building 3D printers, including a Kossel-style delta, and using them as a rapid design-and-manufacture pipeline. The printers themselves are the ongoing project through continuous hardware improvement, tuning, and repair.
Overview
A delta printer as a moving target
Delta-style printers trade a simpler frame for more demanding kinematics. Every upgrade to the effector, carriages, or build plate changes the calibration, and that constant tuning loop, along with using the printer to manufacture its own replacement parts, is much of what makes the project interesting.
Upgrades
Iterative hardware improvement
- Effector redesign and upgrade for improved print quality
- Under-desk mounting solution designed, printed, and installed
- Ongoing delta calibration and geometry correction as the hardware evolves
- Reprinting the printer's own upgraded parts as each design improves
Use as a pipeline
CAD/CAM for real problems
Beyond the printer as a project in itself, it serves as a rapid-prototyping pipeline. Parts are designed in CAD, then manufactured and iterated on the same day. That loop has produced everything from printer upgrades to practical fixtures and solutions for everyday problems.
